ILIAD NOUN

ild.01 Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to Dogs and Vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another.
ild.01 And which of the Gods was it that set them on to quarrel? It was the son of Jove and Leto; for he was angry with the king and sent a pestilence upon the host to plague the people, because the son of Atreus had dishonoured Chryses his priest.
ild.01 Now Chryses had come to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and had brought with him a great ransom: moreover he bore in his hand the sceptre of Apollo wreathed with a suppliant s wreath and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus, who were their chiefs.
ild.01 Sons" of Atreus," he cried, "and all other Achaeans, may the Gods who dwell in Olympus grant you to sack the city of Priam, and to reach your homes in safety; but free my daughter, and accept a ransom for her, in reverence to Apollo, son of Jove.
ild.01 Son" of Atreus," said he, "I deem that we should now turn roving home if we would escape destruction, for we are being cut down by war and pestilence at once.
ild.01 And Achilles answered, "Most noble son of Atreus, covetous beyond all mankind, how shall the Achaeans find you another prize? We have no common store from which to take one.
ild.01 The son of Peleus was furious, and his heart within his shaggy breast was divided whether to draw his sword, push the others aside, and kill the son of Atreus, or to restrain himself and check his anger.
ild.01 "Why are you here," said he, "daughter of aegis bearing Jove? To see the pride of Agamemnon, son of Atreus? Let me tell you and it shall surely be he shall pay for this insolence with his life.
ild.01 But the son of Peleus again began railing at the son of Atreus, for he was still in a rage.
ild.01 You devour your people, for you are king over a feeble folk; otherwise, son of Atreus, henceforward you would insult no man.
ild.01 With this the son of Peleus dashed his Gold bestudded sceptre on the ground and took his seat, while the son of Atreus was beginning fiercely from his place upon the other side.
ild.01 Son of Atreus, check your anger, I implore you; end this quarrel with Achilles, who in the day of battle is a tower of strength to the Achaeans.
ild.01 But the son of Atreus bade the people purify themselves; so they purified themselves and cast their filth into the sea.
ild.01 Agamemnon, son of Atreus, has done me dishonour, and has robbed me of my prize by force.
ild.01 The sons of the Achaeans shared it duly among themselves, and chose lovely Chryseis as the meed of Agamemnon; but Chryses, priest of Apollo, came to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and brought with him a great ransom: moreover he bore in his hand the sceptre of Apollo, wreathed with a suppliant s wreath, and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus who were their chiefs.
ild.01 Whereon the son of Atreus rose in anger, and threatened that which he has since done.
ild.02 It sought Agamemnon son of Atreus and found him in his tent, wrapped in a profound slumber.
ild.02 "You are sleeping, son of Atreus; one who has the welfare of his host and so much other care upon his shoulders should dock his sleep.
ild.02 It hovered over my head and said, You are sleeping, son of Atreus; one who has the welfare of his host and so much other care upon his shoulders should dock his sleep.
ild.02 King Mercury gave it to Pelops, the mighty Charioteer, and Pelops to Atreus, shepherd of his people.
ild.02 Atreus, when he died, left it to Thyestes, rich in flocks, and Thyestes in his turn left it to be borne by Agamemnon, that he might be lord of all Argos and of the isles.
ild.02 The Achaeans were angry and disgusted, yet none the less he kept on brawling and bawling at the son of Atreus.
ild.02 Achilles takes it meekly and shows no fight; if he did, son of Atreus, you would never again insult him.
ild.02 There is no viler creature come before Troy with the sons of Atreus.
ild.02 Stand, therefore, son of Atreus, by your own steadfast purpose; lead the Argives on to battle, and leave this handful of men to rot, who scheme, and scheme in vain, to get back to Argos ere they have learned whether Jove be true or a liar.
ild.02 The chiefs about the son of Atreus chose their men and marshalled them, while Minerva went among them holding her priceless aegis that knows neither age nor death.
ild.02 As some great Bull that lords it over the herds upon the plain, even so did Jove make the son of Atreus stand peerless among the multitude of heroes.
ild.02 Those who held the strong city of Mycenae, rich Corinth and Cleonae; Orneae, Araethyrea, and Licyon, where Adrastus reigned of old; Hyperesia, high Gonoessa, and Pellene; Aegium and all the coast land round about Helice; these sent a hundred ships under the command of King Agamemnon, son of Atreus.
ild.02 Who, then, O Muse, was the foremost, whether man or Horse, among those that followed after the sons of Atreus?
ild.03 As one who starts back affrighted, trembling and pale, when he comes suddenly upon a Serpent in some mountain glade, even so did Alexandrus plunge into the throng of Trojan warriors, terror stricken at the sight of the son Atreus.
ild.03 As for your question, the hero of whom you ask is Agamemnon, son of Atreus, a good king and a brave soldier, brother in law as surely as that he lives, to my abhorred and miserable self.
ild.03 The old man marvelled at him and said, "Happy son of Atreus, child of good fortune.
ild.03 The attendants brought on the oath offerings and mixed the wine in the mixing bowls; they poured water over the hands of the chieftains, and the son of Atreus drew the dagger that hung by his sword, and cut wool from the lambs heads; this the men servants gave about among the Trojan and Achaean princes, and the son of Atreus lifted up his hands in prayer.
ild.03 Alexandrus aimed first, and struck the round shield of the son of Atreus, but the spear did not pierce it, for the shield turned its point.
ild.03 Then the son of Atreus drew his sword, and drove at the projecting part of his helmet, but the sword fell shivered in three or four pieces from his hand, and he cried, looking towards Heaven, Father" Jove, of all Gods thou art the most despiteful; I made sure of my revenge, but the sword has broken in my hand, my spear has been hurled in vain, and I have not killed him.
ild.03 Thus they laid themselves on the bed together; but the son of Atreus strode among the throng, looking everywhere for Alexandrus, and no man, neither of the Trojans nor of the allies, could find him.
ild.03 Thus spoke the son of Atreus, and the Achaeans shouted in applause.
ild.04 The son of Atreus went on, glad at heart, till he came upon the two Ajaxes arming themselves amid a host of foot soldiers.
ild.04 And Nestor, knight of Gerene, answered, Son" of Atreus, I too would gladly be the man I was when I slew mighty Ereuthalion; but the Gods will not give us everything at one and the same time.
ild.04 Ulysses glared at him and answered, Son" of Atreus, what are you talking about? How can you say that we are slack? When the Achaeans are in full fight with the Trojans, you shall see, if you care to do so, that the father of Telemachus will join battle with the foremost of them.
ild.04 Diomed made no answer, for he was shamed by the rebuke of Agamemnon; but the son of Capaneus took up his words and said, Son" of Atreus, tell no lies, for you can speak truth if you will.
ild.05 The squires of Idomeneus spoiled him of his armour, while Menelaus, son of Atreus, killed Scamandrius the son of Strophius, a mighty huntsman and keen lover of the chase.
ild.05 These it seems, are of no use, for I have already hit two chieftains, the sons of Atreus and of Tydeus, and though I drew blood surely enough, I have only made them still more furious.
ild.05 The son of Atreus went about among them and exhorted them.
ild.05 These, when they grew up, went to Ilius with the Argive fleet in the cause of Menelaus and Agamemnon sons of Atreus, and there they both of them fell.
ild.06 "Take me alive," he cried, "son of Atreus, and you shall have a full ransom for me: my father is rich and has much treasure of Gold, Bronze, and wrought Iron laid by in his house.
ild.06 Menelaus, therefore, thrust Adrestus from him, whereon King Agamemnon struck him in the flank, and he fell: then the son of Atreus planted his foot upon his breast to draw his spear from the body.
ild.06 Thrice have the bravest of them come thither and assailed it, under the two Ajaxes, Idomeneus, the sons of Atreus, and the brave son of Tydeus, either of their own bidding, or because some soothsayer had told them.
ild.07 Thus he spoke, and when each of them had marked his lot, and had thrown it into the helmet of Agamemnon son of Atreus, the people lifted their hands in prayer, and thus would one of them say as he looked into the vault of heaven, Father" Jove, grant that the lot fall on Ajax, or on the son of Tydeus, or upon the king of rich Mycene himself.
ild.07 When they reached the quarters of the son of Atreus, Agamemnon sacrificed for them a Five year old Bull in honour of Jove the son of Saturn.
ild.07 Son" of Atreus, and other chieftains, inasmuch as many of the Achaeans are now dead, whose blood Mars has shed by the banks of the Scamander, and their souls have gone down to the house of Hades, it will be well when morning comes that we should cease fighting; we will then wheel our dead together with Oxen and Mules and burn them not far from the ships, that when we sail hence we may take the bones of our comrades home to their children.
ild.07 Let us give up Argive Helen and her wealth to the sons of Atreus, for we are now fighting in violation of our solemn covenants, and shall not prosper till we have done as I say.
ild.07 At daybreak let Idaeus go to the ships, and tell Agamemnon and Menelaus sons of Atreus the saying of Alexandrus through whom this quarrel has come about; and let him also be instant with them that they now cease fighting till we burn our dead; hereafter we will fight anew, till heaven decide between us and give victory to one or to the other.
ild.07 Son" of Atreus," he said, "and princes of the Achaean host, Priam and the other noble Trojans have sent me to tell you the saying of Alexandrus through whom this quarrel has come about, if so be that you may find it acceptable.
ild.07 The son of Jason freighted them with Ten thousand measures of wine, which he sent specially to the sons of Atreus, Agamemnon and Menelaus.
ild.08 After him came Agamemnon and Menelaus, sons of Atreus, the two Ajaxes clothed in valour as with a garment, Idomeneus and his companion in arms Meriones, peer of murderous Mars, and Eurypylus the brave son of Euaemon.
ild.08 And Teucer answered, "Most noble son of Atreus, you need not urge me; from the moment we began to drive them back to Ilius, I have never ceased so far as in me lies to look out for men whom I can shoot and kill; I have shot Eight barbed shafts, and all of them have been buried in the flesh of warlike youths, but this mad Dog I cannot hit.
ild.09 The son of Atreus in dismay bade the heralds call the people to a council man by man, but not to cry the matter aloud; he made haste also himself to call them, and they sat sorry at heart in their assembly.
ild.09 Thus he spoke, and the sons of the Achaeans for a long while sat sorrowful there, but they all held their peace, till at last Diomed of the loud battle cry made answer saying, Son" of Atreus, I will chide your folly, as is my right in council.
ild.09 I am giving these instructions to the young men; when they have been attended to, do you, son of Atreus, give your orders, for you are the most royal among us all.
ild.09 The son of Atreus then bade many councillors of the Achaeans to his quarters prepared a great feast in their honour.
ild.09 "With yourself, most noble son of Atreus, king of men, Agamemnon, will I both begin my speech and end it, for you are king over much people.
ild.09 Then Nestor answered, "Most noble son of Atreus, king of men, Agamemnon.
ild.09 Men servants poured water over the hands of the guests, while pages filled the mixing bowls with wine and water, and handed it round after giving every man his drink offering; then, when they had made their offerings, and had drunk each as much as he was minded, the envoys set out from the tent of Agamemnon son of Atreus; and Nestor, looking first to one and then to another, but most especially at Ulysses, was instant with them that they should prevail with the noble son of Peleus.
ild.09 I will be appeased neither by Agamemnon son of Atreus nor by any other of the Danaans, for I see that I have no thanks for all my fighting.
ild.09 With my ships I have taken Twelve cities, and Eleven round about Troy have I stormed with my men by land; I took great store of wealth from every one of them, but I gave all up to Agamemnon son of Atreus.
ild.09 Why, pray, must the Argives needs fight the Trojans? What made the son of Atreus gather the host and bring them? Was it not for the sake of Helen? Are the sons of Atreus the only men in the world who love their wives? Any man of common right feeling will love and cherish her who is his own, as I this Woman, with my whole heart, though she was but a fruitling of my spear.
ild.09 Were not the son of Atreus offering you gifts and promising others later if he were still furious and implacable I am not he that would bid you throw off your anger and help the Achaeans, no matter how great their need; but he is giving much now, and more hereafter; he has sent his captains to urge his suit, and has chosen those who of all the Argives are most acceptable to you; make not then their words and their coming to be of none effect.
ild.09 I say further and lay my saying to your heart vex me no more with this weeping and lamentation, all in the cause of the son of Atreus.
ild.09 Ajax"," replied Achilles, "noble son of Telamon, you have spoken much to my liking, but my blood boils when I think it all over, and remember how the son of Atreus treated me with contumely as though I were some vile tramp, and that too in the presence of the Argives.
ild.09 When the envoys reached the tents of the son of Atreus, the Achaeans rose, pledged them in cups of Gold, and began to question them.
ild.09 Ulysses answered, "Most noble son of Atreus, king of men, Agamemnon, Achilles will not be calmed, but is more fiercely angry than ever, and spurns both you and your gifts.
ild.09 They all held their peace, sitting for a long time silent and dejected, by reason of the sternness with which Achilles had refused them, till presently Diomed said, "Most noble son of Atreus, king of men, Agamemnon, you ought not to have sued the son of Peleus nor offered him gifts.
ild.10 NOW the other princes of the Achaeans slept soundly the whole night through, but Agamemnon son of Atreus was troubled, so that he could get no rest.
ild.10 And Agamemnon answered, Nestor", son of Neleus, honour to the Achaean name, it is I, Agamemnon son of Atreus, on whom Jove has laid labour and sorrow so long as there is breath in my body and my limbs carry me.
ild.10 Nestor replied, "Most noble son of Atreus, king of men, Agamemnon, Jove will not do all for Hector that Hector thinks he will; he will have troubles yet in plenty if Achilles will lay aside his anger.
ild.10 The two Ajaxes, servants of Mars, Meriones, and the son of Nestor all wanted to go, so did Menelaus son of Atreus; Ulysses also wished to go among the host of the Trojans, for he was ever full of daring, and thereon Agamemnon king of men spoke thus: "Diomed," said he, "son of Tydeus, man after my own heart, choose your comrade for yourself take the best man of those that have offered, for many would now go with you.
ild.11 The son of Atreus shouted aloud and bade the Argives gird themselves for battle while he put on his armour.
ild.11 Achilles had once taken both of them prisoners in the glades of Ida, and had bound them with fresh withes as they were shepherding, but he had taken a ransom for them; now, however, Agamemnon son of Atreus smote Isus in the chest above the nipple with his spear, while he struck Antiphus hard by the ear and threw him from his Chariot.
ild.11 The son of Atreus sprang upon them like a Lion, and the pair besought him from their Chariot.
ild.11 "Take us alive," they cried, "son of Atreus, and you shall receive a great ransom for us.
ild.11 As when some mighty forest is all ablaze the eddying gusts whirl fire in all directions till the thickets shrivel and are consumed before the blast of the flame even so fell the heads of the flying Trojans before Agamemnon son of Atreus, and many a noble pair of steeds drew an empty Chariot along the highways of war, for lack of drivers who were lying on the plain, more useful now to Vultures than to their wives.
ild.11 Jove drew Hector away from the darts and dust, with the carnage and din of battle; but the son of Atreus sped onwards, calling out lustily to the Danaans.
ild.11 They flew on by the tomb of old Ilus, son of Dardanus, in the middle of the plain, and past the place of the wild fig tree making always for the city the son of Atreus still shouting, and with hands all bedrabbled in gore; but when they had reached the Scaean gates and the oak tree, there they halted and waited for the others to come up.
ild.11 Meanwhile the Trojans kept on flying over the middle of the plain like a herd cows maddened with fright when a Lion has attacked them in the dead of night he springs on one of them, seizes her neck in the grip of his strong teeth and then laps up her blood and gorges himself upon her entrails even so did King Agamemnon son of Atreus pursue the foe, ever slaughtering the hindmost as they fled pell mell before him.
ild.11 Many a man was flung headlong from his Chariot by the hand of the son of Atreus, for he wielded his spear with fury.
ild.11 He it was that naw met Agamemnon son of Atreus.
ild.11 When they were close up with one another, the son of Atreus missed his aim, and Iphidamas hit him on the girdle below the cuirass and then flung himself upon him, trusting to his strength of arm; the girdle, however, was not pierced, nor nearly so, for the point of the spear struck against the Silver and was turned aside as though it had been lead: King Agamemnon caught it from his hand, and drew it towards him with the fury of a Lion; he then drew his sword, and killed Iphidamas by striking him on the neck.
ild.11 Agamemnon son of Atreus then despoiled him, and carried off his armour into the host of the Achaeans.
ild.11 Thus did the sons of Antenor meet their fate at the hands of the son of Atreus, and go down into the house of Hades.
ild.11 As the sharp pangs which the Eilithuiae, Goddesses of childbirth, daughters of Juno and dispensers of cruel pain, send upon a Woman when she is in labour even so sharp were the pangs of the son of Atreus.
ild.13 True, King Agamemnon son of Atreus is the cause of our disaster by having insulted the son of Peleus, still this is no reason why we should leave off fighting.
ild.13 We too will make you an offer; we will give you the loveliest daughter of the son of Atreus, and will bring her from Argos for you to marry, if you will sack the goodly city of Ilius in company with ourselves; so come along with me, that we may make a covenant at the ships about the marriage, and we will not be hard upon you about gifts of wooing.
ild.13 When the two were hard by one another the spear of the son of Atreus turned aside and he missed his aim; Pisander then struck the shield of brave Menelaus but could not pierce it, for the shield stayed the spear and broke the shaft; nevertheless he was glad and made sure of victory; forthwith, however, the son of Atreus drew his sword and sprang upon him.
ild.14 In the end he deemed it best to go to the son of Atreus; but meanwhile the hosts were fighting and killing one another, and the hard Bronze rattled on their bodies, as they thrust at one another with their swords and spears.
ild.14 The wounded kings, the son of Tydeus, Ulysses, and Agamemnon son of Atreus, fell in Nestor as they were coming up from their ships for theirs were drawn up some way from where the fighting was going on, being on the shore itself inasmuch as they had been beached first, while the wall had been built behind the hindermost.
ild.14 Ulysses looked fiercely at him and said, Son" of Atreus, what are you talking about? Wretch, you should have commanded some other and baser army, and not been ruler over us to whom Jove has allotted a life of hard fighting from youth to old age, till we every one of us perish.
ild.14 He took Agamemnon s right hand in his own and said, Son" of Atreus, I take it Achilles is glad now that he sees the Achaeans routed and slain, for he is utterly without remorse may he come to a bad end and heaven confound him.
ild.14 The son of Atreus then wounded Hyperenor shepherd of his people, in the flank, and the Bronze point made his entrails gush out as it tore in among them; on this his life came hurrying out of him at the place where he had been wounded, and his eyes were closed in darkness.
ild.16 Diomed son of Tydeus no longer wields his spear to defend the Danaans, neither have I heard the voice of the son of Atreus coming from his hated head, whereas that of murderous Hector rings in my cars as he gives orders to the Trojans, who triumph over the Achaeans and fill the whole plain with their cry of battle.
ild.16 The son of Atreus King Agamemnon will thus learn his folly in showing no respect to the bravest of the Achaeans.
ild.17 BRAVE Menelaus son of Atreus now came to know that Patroclus had fallen, and made his way through the front ranks clad in full armour to bestride him.
ild.17 But the son of Panthous had also noted the body, and came up to Menelaus saying, Menelaus", son of Atreus, draw back, leave the body, and let the bloodstained spoils be.
ild.17 The son of Atreus would have then carried off the armour of the son of Panthous with ease, had not Phoebus Apollo been angry, and in the guise of Mentes chief of the Cicons incited Hector to attack him.
ild.17 Meanwhile Menelaus son of Atreus has bestridden the body of Patroclus and killed the noblest of the Trojans, Euphorbus son of Panthous, so that he can fight no more.
ild.17 When the son of Atreus heard him, he said to himself in his dismay, "Alas! what shall I do? I may not let the Trojans take the armour of Patroclus who has fallen fighting on my behalf, lest some Danaan who sees me should cry shame upon me.
ild.17 While he was thus in two minds, the Trojans came up to him with Hector at their head; he therefore drew back and left the body, turning about like some bearded Lion who is being chased by Dogs and men from a stockyard with spears and hue and cry, whereon he is daunted and slinks sulkily off even so did Menelaus son of Atreus turn and leave the body of Patroclus.
ild.17 But Ajax came up with his shield like wall before him, on which Hector withdrew under shelter of his men, and sprang on to his Chariot, giving the armour over to the Trojans to take to the city, as a great trophy for himself; Ajax, therefore, covered the body of Patroclus with his broad shield and bestrode him; as a Lion stands over his whelps if hunters have come upon him in a forest when he is with his little ones in the pride and fierceness of his strength he draws his knit brows down till they cover his eyes even so did Ajax bestride the body of Patroclus, and by his side stood Menelaus son of Atreus, nursing great sorrow in his heart.
ild.17 First she took the form and voice of Phoenix and spoke to Menelaus son of Atreus, who was standing near her.
ild.17 Whereon he fell heavily forward, and Menelaus son of Atreus drew off his body from the Trojans into the ranks of his own people.
ild.19 When the Achaeans were got together Achilles rose and said, Son" of Atreus, surely it would have been better alike for both you and me, when we two were in such high anger about Briseis, surely it would have been better, had Diana s arrow slain her at the ships on the day when I took her after having sacked Lyrnessus.
ild.19 And Achilles answered, Son" of Atreus, king of men Agamemnon, you can give such gifts as you think proper, or you can withhold them: it is in your own hands.
ild.19 As for you, son of Atreus, treat people more righteously in future; it is no disgrace even to a king that he should make amends if he was wrong in the first instance.
ild.19 Then said Achilles, Son" of Atreus, king of men Agamemnon, see to these matters at some other season, when there is breathing time and when I am calmer.
ild.19 When he had thus spoken he took with him the sons of Nestor, with Meges son of Phyleus, Thoas, Meriones, Lycomedes son of Creontes, and Melanippus, and went to the tent of Agamemnon son of Atreus.
ild.19 The son of Atreus drew the knife which he wore by the scabbard of his mighty sword, and began by cutting off some bristles from the boar, lifting up his hands in prayer as he did so.
ild.19 The son of Atreus had not else stirred me to so fierce an anger, nor so stubbornly taken Briseis from me against my will.
ild.19 On this he sent the other princes away, save only the two sons of Atreus and Ulysses, Nestor, Idomeneus, and the knight Phoenix, who stayed behind and tried to comfort him in the bitterness of his sorrow: but he would not be comforted till he should have flung himself into the jaws of battle, and he fetched sigh on sigh, thinking ever of Patroclus.
ild.23 The sun would have gone down upon their mourning had not Achilles presently said to Agamemnon, Son" of Atreus, for it is to you that the people will give ear, there is a time to mourn and a time to cease from mourning; bid the people now leave the pyre and set about getting their dinners: we, to whom the dead is dearest, will see to what is wanted here, and let the other princes also stay by me.
ild.23 Presently they who were about the son of Atreus drew near in a body, and roused him with the noise and tramp of their coming.
ild.23 He sat upright and said, Son" of Atreus, and all other princes of the Achaeans, first pour red wine everywhere upon the fire and quench it; let us then gather the bones of Patroclus son of Menoetius, singling them out with care; they are easily found, for they lie in the middle of the pyre, while all else, both men and Horses, has been thrown in a heap and burned at the outer edge.
ild.23 Son" of Atreus, and all other Achaeans, these are the prizes that lie waiting the winners of the Chariot races.
ild.23 Next to him, yellow haired Menelaus son of Atreus rose and yoked his fleet Horses, Agamemnon s mare Aethe, and his own Horse Podargus.
ild.23 Achilles shook the helmet, and the lot of Antilochus son of Nestor fell out first; next came that of King Eumelus, and after his, those of Menelaus son of Atreus and of Meriones.
ild.23 Menelaus son of Atreus came next behind him, but Antilochus called to his father s Horses.
ild.23 I do not bid you try to beat the steeds of the son of Tydeus, for Minerva has put running into them, and has covered Diomed with glory; but you must overtake the Horses of the son of Atreus and not be left behind, or Aethe who is so fleet will taunt you.
ild.23 The son of Atreus was afraid and shouted out, Antilochus", you are driving recklessly; rein in your Horses; the road is too narrow here, it will be wider soon, and you can pass me then; if you foul my Chariot you may bring both of us to a mischief.
ild.23 I will wager you a tripod or cauldron, and Agamemnon son of Atreus shall decide whose Horses are first.
ild.23 Then he stood up and said among the Argives, Son" of Atreus, and all other Achaeans, I invite our two champion boxers to lay about them lustily and compete for these prizes.
ild.23 Then the son of Peleus brought in a spear and a cauldron that had never been on the fire; it was worth an ox, and was chased with a pattern of flowers; and those that throw the javelin stood up to wit the son of Atreus, king of men Agamemnon, and Meriones, stalwart squire of Idomeneus.
ild.23 But Achilles spoke saying, Son" of Atreus, we know how far you excel all others both in power and in throwing the javelin; take the cauldron back with you to your ships, but if it so please you, let us give the spear to Meriones; this at least is what I should myself wish.
ild.24 We stood still and marvelled, for Achilles in his anger with the son of Atreus suffered us not to fight.

Arise Greece! from thy silent sleep, 2000 years long it is! Forget not, thy ancient culture, beautiful and marvelous it is!
