ILIAD NOUN

ild.02 Jove gave it to Mercury, slayer of Argus, guide and guardian.
ild.02 King Mercury gave it to Pelops, the mighty Charioteer, and Pelops to Atreus, shepherd of his people.
ild.05 Mars would have then perished had not fair Eeriboea, stepmother to the sons of Aloeus, told Mercury, who stole him away when he was already well nigh worn out by the severity of his bondage.
ild.14 He sprang towards Acamas, but Acamas did not stand his ground, and he killed Ilioneus son of the rich flock master Phorbas, whom Mercury had favoured and endowed with greater wealth than any other of the Trojans.
ild.15 Now, however, I will give way in spite of my displeasure; furthermore let me tell you, and I mean what I say if contrary to the desire of myself, Minerva driver of the spoil, Juno, Mercury, and King Vulcan, Jove spares steep Ilius, and will not let the Achaeans have the great triumph of sacking it, let him understand that he will incur our implacable resentment.
ild.16 Polymele, daughter of Phylas the graceful dancer, bore him; the mighty slayer of Argos was enamoured of her as he saw her among the singing Women at a dance held in honour of Diana the rushing huntress of the Golden arrows; he therefore Mercury, giver of all good went with her into an upper chamber, and lay with her in secret, whereon she bore him a noble son Eudorus, singularly fleet of foot and in fight valiant.
ild.20 Juno, Pallas Minerva, earth encircling Neptune, Mercury bringer of good luck and excellent in all cunning all these joined the host that came from the ships; with them also came Vulcan in all his glory, limping, but yet with his thin legs plying lustily under him.
ild.20 Apollo with his arrows took his stand to face King Neptune, while Minerva took hers against the God of war; the archer goddess Diana with her Golden arrows, sister of far darting Apollo, stood to face Juno; Mercury the lusty bringer of good luck faced Leto, while the mighty eddying river whom men can Scamander, but Gods Xanthus, matched himself against Vulcan.
ild.24 Thus shamefully did Achilles in his fury dishonour Hector; but the blessed Gods looked down in pity from heaven, and urged Mercury, slayer of Argus, to steal the body.
ild.24 The Gods would have Mercury slayer of Argus steal the body, but in furtherance of our peace and amity henceforward, I will concede such honour to your son as I will now tell you.
ild.24 But Priam and Idaeus as they showed out upon the plain did not escape the ken of all seeing Jove, who looked down upon the old man and pitied him; then he spoke to his son Mercury and said, Mercury", for it is you who are the most disposed to escort men on their way, and to hear those whom you will hear, go, and so conduct Priam to the ships of the Achaeans that no other of the Danaans shall see him nor take note of him until he reach the son of Peleus.
ild.24 Thus he spoke and Mercury, guide and guardian, slayer of Argus, did as he was told.
ild.24 Now when Priam and Idaeus had driven past the great tomb of Ilius, they stayed their Mules and Horses that they might drink in the river, for the shades of night were falling, when, therefore, Idaeus saw Mercury standing near them he said to Priam, "Take heed, descendant of Dardanus; here is matter which demands consideration.
ild.24 Mercury opened the gate for the old man, and brought in the treasure that he was taking with him for the son of Peleus.
ild.24 Then he sprang from the Chariot on to the ground and said, Sir", it is I, immortal Mercury, that am come with you, for my father sent me to escort you.
ild.24 With these words Mercury went back to high Olympus.
ild.24 And now both Gods and mortals were fast asleep through the livelong night, but upon Mercury alone, the bringer of good luck, sleep could take no hold for he was thinking all the time how to get King Priam away from the ships without his being seen by the strong force of sentinels.
ild.24 Mercury then yoked their Horses and Mules, and drove them quickly through the host so that no man perceived them.
ild.24 When they came to the ford of eddying Xanthus, begotten of immortal Jove, Mercury went back to high Olympus, and dawn in robe of saffron began to break over all the land.

Arise Greece! from thy silent sleep, 2000 years long it is! Forget not, thy ancient culture, beautiful and marvelous it is!
