ILIAD NOUN

ild.09 Let Phoenix, dear to Jove, lead the way; let Ajax and Ulysses follow, and let the heralds Odius and Eurybates go with them.
ild.09 As soon as they had had enough to eat and drink, Ajax made a sign to Phoenix, and when he saw this, Ulysses filled his cup with wine and pledged Achilles.
ild.09 As for Phoenix, let him sleep here that he may sail with me in the morning if he so will.
ild.09 They all held their peace, dismayed at the sternness with which he had denied them, till presently the old knight Phoenix in his great fear for the ships of the Achaeans, burst into tears and said, "Noble Achilles, if you are now minded to return, and in the fierceness of your anger will do nothing to save the ships from burning, how, my son, can I remain here without you? Your father Peleus bade me go with you when he sent you as a mere lad from Phthia to Agamemnon.
ild.09 And Achilles answered, Phoenix", old friend and father, I have no need of such honour.
ild.09 On this she nodded quietly to Patroclus as a sign that he was to prepare a bed for Phoenix, and that the others should take their leave.
ild.09 But Patroclus told his men and the maid servants to make ready a comfortable bed for Phoenix; they therefore did so with Sheepskins, a rug, and a sheet of fine linen.
ild.09 The old man Phoenix stayed where he was to sleep, for so Achilles would have it, that he might go home with him in the morning if he so would; but he will not take him by force.
ild.14 Then there was the daughter of Phoenix, who bore me Minos and Rhadamanthus: there was Semele, and Alcmena in Thebes by whom I begot my Lion hearted son Hercules, while Semele became mother to Bacchus the comforter of mankind.
ild.16 The old knight Phoenix was captain of the fourth company, and Alcimedon, noble son of Laerceus of the fifth.
ild.17 First she took the form and voice of Phoenix and spoke to Menelaus son of Atreus, who was standing near her.
ild.17 Menelaus answered, Phoenix", my good old friend, may Minerva vouchsafe me strength and keep the darts from off me, for so shall I stand by Patroclus and defend him; his death has gone to my heart, but Hector is as a raging fire and deals his blows without ceasing, for Jove is now granting him a time of triumph.
ild.19 On this he sent the other princes away, save only the two sons of Atreus and Ulysses, Nestor, Idomeneus, and the knight Phoenix, who stayed behind and tried to comfort him in the bitterness of his sorrow: but he would not be comforted till he should have flung himself into the jaws of battle, and he fetched sigh on sigh, thinking ever of Patroclus.
ild.23 They took their places in line; Achilles showed them the doubling post round which they were to turn, some way off upon the plain; here he stationed his father s follower Phoenix as umpire, to note the running, and report truly.

Arise Greece! from thy silent sleep, 2000 years long it is! Forget not, thy ancient culture, beautiful and marvelous it is!
